Climate
The climate of Chicago is a humid continental climate, typical of the Midwestern United States. It has distinctive characteristics associated with its position where the Great Plains meet Lake Michigan.
Sudden changes of weather, large daily temperature ranges, and unpredictable precipitation patterns are all staples of Chicago weather.
Chicago has four clearly defined seasons, although in certain years some seasons may linger into months they do not traditionally occupy, or arrive exceptionally early, pre-empting the current season.
Summer in Chicago has thunderstorms, and summer rain from short-lived hit-or-miss storms rather than a long rainfalls. In a normal summer, temperatures exceed 32°C. Contrary to what one might think, summer is actually the rainiest season in Chicago. During winter in Chicago, temperatures vary , but even in mild winters one will experience bouts of cold weather.
When to go
The ideal time to visit the Windy City is summer or fall. The first snow doesn't appear until late November at the earliest. If you don't mind being indoors, winter is a great time to visit. The weather may be cold, but there are no lines at most attractions and the hotel rates are lower.
