Climate
The climate in the far north is distinctly different to that of down south. Generally, India's climate is defined by three seasons - the hot, the wet (monsoon) and the cool, each of which can vary in duration from north to south. Around October the monsoon ends for most of the country. This is when India sees most tourists. During October and November it's generally not too hot and not too cool. In the winter (around mid-December to mid-January), Delhi and other northern cities can become very cold, especially at night. In the far south the temperatures become comfortably warm during this period.
When to go
Daytime temperatures are comfortable all year. In northern India, some mountain roads are only accessible during the summer months (June-September), generally the best time to visit the hills. The northern reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh are in rain-shadow and are not hit by the monsoonal rains. The most pleasant time to visit most places is during the cooler period: November to around mid-February.
